Funny, I don't remember this part.
Rachelle and I have, recently, been watching a Russian Sherlock Holmes series from the late seventies and early eighties. Pretty good stuff, actually, although some of the dialogue appears to suffer from having been translated into Russian and back again.
Notable for several reasons. For one, Watson actually gets billing: it's called "Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson." For another, the sharp-as-a-tack, intelligent, slightly-uptight version of Watson is remarkably similar to Jude Law. In fact, there's a lot of stuff that reminds us quite a lot of the new movie. I'd put money on Guy Ritchie having seen this version.
However, I do have to say. I don't recall the part in Study in Scarlet where Watson, in a fit of well-meaning but rash bravado, decides this detective business isn't so hard, and goes to form a one-man ambush for the murderer, and getting whacked in the back of the head. I also don't recall Holmes collecting him up afterwards and taking him home, snuggling in the cab.
And don't think that's out of context. They really just stay like that, Watson's head against Holmes's chest, for the whole scene.
However, even more interesting than this, or any of the many many many other scenes where they invade each other's personal space (or the ones where Lestrade tries to do this with Watson and Watson gets annoyed, wtf), is that Professor Moriarty apparently employs the Wolfman.
This may or may not have something to do with the fact that Moriarty appears to be Dracula.
He also likes to fondle tables and wiggle his fingers menacingly at Holmes!
